UFC 109 - Randy Couture chokes out Mark Coleman in the second round

UFC “Hall of Famer” Randy Couture won the battle of the legends tonight at UFC 109 in Las Vegas, Nevada, choking out Mark Coleman in the second round to take one step closer to another shot at the title.

Both men size each other up early on with Couture repeatedly landing the jab over and over. He lands a nice left-right combination before following up with an uppercut and hook. Coleman answers with a nice right hook of his own which backs Couture up. Couture gets the fight up against the fence, pressuring Coleman in his trademark style. Couture lands a series of punches, including two nasty uppercuts to see out a controlling round.

Couture lands a left early on before both men clinch again. Couture immediately takes Coleman to the gound and secures the full mount.  “The Natural” goes to work with ground and pound before Coleman gives up his back and Couture locks on the rear naked choke. Seconds later Coleman goes limp and the referee is forced to step in.

The win will certainly put Couture in the mix at light heavyweight and possibly set up a number one contender’s shootout with another of the division’s elite. As for Coleman, it could have been his last shot at securing a title shot, although I’m sure there’s plenty of gas left in the tank to stick around for now.
